Description:
Sublingual nitroglycerin belongs to a class of anti-anginal agents called vasodilators. It is used to treat acute symptoms of angina pectoris. It relieves chest pain by widening the vessels supplying blood to the heart as well as relaxing the blood vessels throughout the rest of the body. This reduces the amount of work the heart must do to pump blood out.

Directions and Warnings:
Adults Under 60: Sublingual tablets (Nitrostat): 1 tablet (0.15 to 0.6 mg) dissolved under tongue at the first sign of an acute anginal attack. May repeat every 5 minutes until pain is relieved up to a maximum of 3 doses in 15 minutes. If pain persists, nPrecautions: Be sure that chest discomfort is due to angina pectoris. If not, do not use this drug. Do not chew or swallow sublingual forms. Do not inhale spray from translingual forms. Infants and Children: Safety and efficacy have not been established. Adults Over 60: Use with caution in this age group, as older patients are more likely to experience the drug s adverse reactions. Drug Dependency: This drug is not expected to cause physical or psychological dependence. Pregnancy Risk Category: C Pregnancy Warnings: There are no adequate studies of fetal harm in pregnant women. This drug should be used only if the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Nursing Mothers: It is not known whether this drug is secreted through breast milk and affects the infant. However, as with most drugs, it is advisable not to use while you are breastfeeding. Consult your physician if you plan to breastfeed. Prolonged Use: Sublingual and translingual nitroglycerin products are used on an as-needed basis. Discontinuing Therapy: Do not discontinue without your physician s consent. Operating a Vehicle or Heavy Machinery: If possible, patents should sit down when taking sublingual or translingual nitroglycerin. This eliminates the possibility of falling due to lightheadedness or dizziness. Nitroglycerin may produce a burning or tingling sensation in the mouth, however, the ability to produce this sensaion should not be considered a reliable method for determining the potency of tablets. Sun Exposure: No problems are expected.
