Description:
Transdermal nitroglycerin belongs to a class of antianginal agents called vasodilators. It is used to prevent angina pectoris due to coronary artery disease. It relieves chest pain by widening the vessels supplying blood to the heart.

Directions and Warnings:
Adults Under 60: Ointment: Start with 2 daily 1/2-inch doses (7.5 mg), one applied when waking up in the morning and one applied 6 hours later. The dosage may be increased if needed and tolerated. There should be a 10-12 hour nitrate free interval daily. Precautions: You may need a 10-12 hour nitrate free interval to avoid tolerance. Do not use nitroglycerin continually without your physician s consent. Severe hypotension may occur with even small doses of nitroglycerin. This effect may manifest as lightheadedness on standing, especially after rising from a seated or lying down position. Lightheadedness may be more frequent or pronounced in patients who have also consumed alcohol. Consult your physician if you are volume depleted or if you know that you are already hypotensive. You may experience headaches when using this drug. Do not change your dosage schedule to avoid the headaches. Do not use ointment or patch dosage forms to treat an acute angina attack. There may be enough residual nitroglycerin in discarded patches to cause harm to children and pets. Discard used patches responsibly. Adults Over 60: Use with caution in this age group, as older patients are more likely to experience the drug s adverse reactions. Infants and Children: Safety and efficacy have not been established. Drug Dependency: This drug is not expected to cause physical or psychological dependence. Pregnancy Risk Category: C Pregnancy Warnings: There are no adequate studies of fetal harm in pregnant women. This drug should be used only if the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Nursing Mothers: It is not known whether this drug is secreted through breast milk and affects the infant. However, as with most drugs, it is advisable not to use while you are breastfeeding. Consult your physician if you plan to breastfeed. Prolonged Use: Prolonged use may cause drug to become less effective. Consult your physician about regular examinations to check blood pressure and heart rate. There should be a daily drug free interval of 10-12 hours with prolonged daily use. Discontinuing Therapy: Do not discontinue without your physician s consent. Operating a Vehicle or Heavy Machinery: This drug may produce side effects that impair your mental alertness, such as dizziness or faintness. Avoid such activities if you feel these symptoms. Avoid consuming alcohol or other CNS depressants while taking this drug. They may intensify these side effects. Sun Exposure: No problems are expected.
