Description:
Oral potassium chloride is a dietary supplement used to treat low potassium levels in the body and prevent low potassium levels caused by specific drugs or disease states.

Ingredients:


Directions and Warnings:
Adults Under 60: Oral solution: For treatment or prevention of low potassium: 20 mEq diluted in 1/2 glass of liquid 1 to 4 times daily. The dose should be adjusted as needed. Packets for oral solution: For treatment or prevention of low potassium: 15 to 25 mEq in 4 to 6 oz of cold water 2 to 4 times daily. The dose should be adjusted as needed. Extended release capsules: To treat low potassium: 16 to 24 mEq per day in 2 to 3 doses. The dose should be adjusted as needed. To prevent low potassium: 40 to 100 mEq per day in 2 to 3 doses. The dose should be adjusted as needed. Extended release tablets: To treatment or prevention of low potassium: 6.7 to 20 mEq three times daily. Take the oral solution with or immediately after eating food. Some extended release tablets have a wax matrix which helps release the active drug. Do not be alarmed if you see the used wax matrix in the stool. Do not crush or chew the extended release formulations that have a wax matrix. Adults 60 and Over: Reduced dosage may be necessary. Consult your physician. Infants and Children: Oral solution: For treatment or prevention of low potassium: 15 to 40 mEq per square meter or 1 to 3 mEq/kg per day diluted in liquid in divided doses. Packets for oral solution: For treatment or prevention of low potassium: 15 to 25 mEq per square meter or 1 to 3 mEq/kg per day well diluted in liquid in divided doses. Extended release capsules and tablets: The dose has not been established. Maximum Dosage Recommendations: For adults: 100 mEq per day. For children: Do not exceed the recommended doses, unless deemed necessary by your physician. If You Miss a Dose: Take as soon as possible. If close to the next dose, skip and take the next dose. Do not double the dose.Precautions: This drug has caused gastrointestinal lesions and bleeding in the upper GI mucosa, stenotic and/or ulcerative lesions of the small bowel, and resultant death. These lesions are caused by high local concentrations of potassium ions in the region of the dissolving tablets, which inflames the bowel. The frequency of GI lesion is estimated to be 1 in 100,000 patient years. Adults Over 60: Consult your physician about potassium monitoring. Drug Dependency: This drug is not expected to cause physical or psychological dependence. Pregnancy Risk Category: C Pregnancy Warnings: There are no adequate studies of fetal harm in pregnant women. This drug should be used only if the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Nursing Mothers: It is not known whether this drug is secreted through breast milk and affects the infant. However, as with most drugs, it is advisable not to use while you are breastfeeding. Consult your physician if you plan to breastfeed. Prolonged Use: Consult your physician about regular checkups to monitor the heart function, potassium levels, magnesium levels and kidney function. Discontinuing Therapy: Do not discontinue without your physician s consent. Operating a Vehicle or Heavy Machinery: No problems expected. Sun Exposure: No problems expected.
